You have an amazing opportunity to educate your attendees and make their travel to and from your meetings easier!
Imagine your attendees at the airport and breezing through the airport security checkpoint in minutes without having to remove their shoes, their light outerwear and belt or their computer. Sound appealing?! That is one of the several potential benefits of educating meeting attendees about TSA Pre✓™.
Planners and CVBs: Partners in Attendance Building
We here at Destination Marketing Association International’s empowerMINT.com recognize that convention & visitors bureaus and meeting planners are all working toward the same goal – the success of the meetings industry. And that begins with creating a more pleasurable travel experience for the meeting attendee. The guide below will continue our on-going discussion on how we, as an industry can collaborate and work together to serve the meeting attendee, and in this case, make the travel experience more positive.
Attendee Travel Made a Little Easier
Planners have to consider so many different factors when selecting a location for their meetings including how easy or difficult it will be for their attendees to get there. We all know the frustrations of traveling. A planner never wants to hear horrific stories, especially those recounted on social media about how difficult it was to get to their meeting.
Imagine hearing this feedback from your attendees:
- @SteveForston said “Keeping Score – #TSAPrecheck at CLE – 2 minutes – Fantastic!”
- @smnutritionist said “Going 2 conference – went thru #TSAprecheck-amazing! Makes getting thru security an absolute breeze-highly recommend 4 #travel ease
- @DarionL1 wrote: “Wow, from car to gate and under 4 minutes. Thanks #TSAprecheck #BestThingEver”
Benefits of TSA Pre✓™
TSA Pre✓™ is a program which utilizes a risk-based approach to passenger screening. After a traveler has been approved into the program, they provide their “Known Traveler Number” when making reservations. When they check in, they will see a TSA Pre✓™ indicator on their boarding pass. Upon arrival at the checkpoint, the traveler will present their boarding pass and ID to the Travel Document Checker (TDC). They then proceed through the TSA Pre✓™ lane. Currently there are dedicated TSA Pre✓™ lanes provided at 118 airports and expedited screening provided to eligible travelers at all airports.
The TSA Pre✓™ experience includes:
- Access to the TSA Pre✓™ lane
- Quicker, and more efficient airport security screening
As a bonus, TSA Pre✓™ passengers have no divestiture of:
- 3-1-1 compliant bag
- Light outwear/jacket
(Just a disclaimer…TSA will always incorporate unpredictable security measures throughout the airport and no individual will be guaranteed expedited screening)
Common Misconceptions About Obtaining TSA Pre✓™
Myth: “It will take too much of my time to sign up”
Reality: Actually, after filling out the brief online application, you can set an appointment at one of over 300 locations in the U.S. Be sure to check their site as more airport and off-airport enrollment center locations are opening each week.
The application and appointment will take only about 10 minutes each. Just think of the time saved not having to wait in the long security lines! And the application is good for five years!
Myth: “There aren’t any convenient locations for me to do the in-person interview”
Reality: With over 300 locations in the U.S., including convenient locations at nearly 30 U.S. airports, there is a location within every major city.
Myth: “I’m already a frequent flier which will already give me access to the TSA Pre✓™line”
Reality: While your chances of getting into the TSA Pre✓™ are greater than a regular passenger, travelers with known traveler numbers are the most likely to end up in the TSA Pre✓™ line.
Educate your attendees that the process is easy to complete and doesn’t take nearly as much time as they might expect.
Who is Eligible?
Eligible TSA Pre✓™ travelers include:
- U.S. Citizens and lawful permanent residents enrolled in the TSA Pre✓™ application program
- Frequent fliers who opt-in via invitation from participating airlines
- All members of Global Entry
- U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents and Canadian citizens who are members of NEXUS.
- U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents who are members of SENTRI
- Active members of the U.S. armed services and federal government employees from selected agencies
- Passengers 12 and younger traveling with an eligible TSA Pre✓™ passenger
Applying for TSA Pre✓™
Step 1: Visit tsa.gov to learn more about the TSA Pre✓™ application program. You can pre-enroll online and make an appointment at an application center, or skip directly to step 2.
Step 2: Visit an application center to provide required information , documentation and fingerprints. Pay the $85 fee.
Step 3: Approved applicants will receive a known traveler number (KTN) via U.S. mail within two to three weeks. The number is valid for five years.
Step 4: Add the KTN to each participating airline profile or provide it when making your air travel reservations. (The name used when applying for TSA Pre✓™ must match the name used when booking travel) If you have previous reservations, contact your air carrier to update your reservations with your new KTN.
Key Takeaway: Getting your known traveler number and including it in your airline reservation greatly increases your chances of getting selected for the TSA Pre✓™ line (higher than being a frequent flier).
