Providing authentic experiences for meeting attendees is always a challenge. How do you plan off site activities during your meeting that dually reinforce learning goals and give real depth, in order for attendees to walk away having experienced something unique and memorable in the city? Sounds like a tall order? Fort Worth makes it easy! Not only can the values of the American Frontier: hard work, exploration, and unselfishness, be fittingly tied to most learning objectives, in this one of a kind destination, you can serve up some “Texas size” fun to boot!
You easily can put the emphasis on innovation and problem solving by visiting some of Fort Worth’s most dynamic venues. Like no other city in the United States, Fort Worth captures the spirit and authenticity of the American West. With a rich variety of Western attractions, our tie as the “City of Cowboys and Culture” is as strong as ever.
There are visible reminders of Fort Worth’s heritage throughout the city. But no district is as distinctly authentic as the Stockyards National Historic District. The Stockyards, a 15-block historic area, boasts some of the finest Western entertainment found in America, including numerous restaurants, saloons, museums – such as the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame – and a variety of Western heritage events scheduled throughout the year, including the Frontier Forts Days (in May) and the Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering & Western Swing Festival (in late October).
The Historic Stockyards is also home to the Fort Worth Herd – the world’s only twice-daily cattle drive. Longhorn cattle, guided by cowhands in period dress, make their way down Exchange Avenue, a fitting tribute to Fort Worth’s heritage as a major stop along the Chisholm Trail. Not only is this dynamic event a tremendous crowd pleaser, it is also a real way to spike motivation with a group! And don’t miss Billy Bob’s Texas, the world’s largest honky-tonk! Able to hold 6,000 people, Billy Bob’s offers great space for special group events with an authentic Western feel. Billy Bob’s also features live music, more than 30 bar stations, a souvenir shop, a restaurant, pool tables, dance floors, and live bull riding on Friday and Saturday nights.
The Western sport of rodeo also enjoys a long association with Fort Worth. A group unfamiliar with rodeo is in for a treat! The world’s first indoor rodeo was held here in 1918 at the Cowtown Coliseum located in the Historic Stockyards. Today, the Stockyards Championship Rodeo takes place every Friday and Saturday night year-round at Cowtown Coliseum. Fort Worth’s most famous rodeo is the Fort Worth Exposition and Livestock Show.
Each January and February, the city celebrates this annual event, along with nearly one million visitors to the Stock Show grounds at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth’s Cultural District. Founded in 1896, it is the oldest stock show in America and even boasts the world’s longest non-mechanical parade, with hundreds of horses and riders heralding the start of this cherished event.
In addition to this Fort Worth’s authentic Western heritage, Fort Worth is also home to five world-class museums, including the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, known for collecting, preserving, and exhibiting the finest examples of American art , and the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, dedicated to the pioneering spirit of the women of the American West.
Make sure to see Sundance Square, downtown Fort Worth’s dynamic 35-block entertainment district. Home to authentic Western heritage sites such as the Chisholm Trail Mural, the Sid Richardson Museum and Fort Worth’s Heritage Trails, Sundance Square also features restaurants, nightlife, shopping, entertainment venues and more.
So, consider can taking your group to be part of one of Fort Worth’s rousing events, or just bring the rich excitement of Fort Worth’s authentic Western heritage to theme one of your events or team building activities. A real bull or a mechanical one can give attendees a way to relate first hand to the adventure of rodeo.
