"The CVB is like an extension of my staff because they work diligently for my event to be successful."
Jana Brown, Director, Conference Events with Golf Course Superintendents Association/Golf Industry Show (GCSAA/GIS) began her industry experience as a coordinator at GCSAA in the exhibit sales department and has never looked back! We recently spoke with Jana and she shared with us how working with a CVB has become an invaluable tool she has come to rely on for not only their free services but also their irreplaceable industry knowledge.
SUZZANNE: What’s the hardest/most challenging part of your job? What do you most enjoy?
JANA: I would say the hardest/most challenging part of my job are financial and staff resources. Resources continue to be reduced but expectations continue to increase. What I most enjoy however is watching the members participate and enjoy the events I have planned and executed. There is nothing better than to see the vision you create for an event come to life and the attendees enjoy it. Additionally, working with colleagues throughout the country is something I really enjoy.
SUZZANNE: Outside the industry, what is your dream job?
JANA: That’s a tough one – I love my job. I’m right where I want to be!
SUZZANNE: How did you first become aware of the services CVBs provide?
JANA: I first became aware of the services CVBs provide during my very first site inspection. I realized quickly that CVBs are a valuable (and free!) resource that I can call upon throughout my planning process. And I’ve used them ever since!
SUZZANNE: What do you most value about your relationship with San Antonio CVB/other CVBs in general?
JANA: They are there, ready, willing and able, to assist with most everything I ask. They are open to new ideas and work with planners to create and implement them. It’s a great partnership.
SUZZANNE: Thinking about San Antonio, if you’ve met there in the past, what are some of the unique attributes that the destination was able to bring to your meeting?
JANA: The atmosphere along the River Walk cannot be matched by any city. Even though we are a citywide event, the River Walk and surrounding area allows our attendees a common networking area that is convenient to all downtown hotels.
SUZZANNE: How would you describe the relationship you have with the CVB? What would you compare it to?
JANA: The CVB is like an extension of my staff because they work diligently for my event to be successful. They have a vested interest in the success of my event.
SUZZANNE: Which specific services do you rely on?
JANA: They have a lot of great services, and I rely specifically on their availability of a customized website, their site inspection coordination and the Industry Advisory Council meeting coordination.
SUZZANNE: What do you think is unique about the value CVBs provide compared to other planning partners you might use?
JANA: San Antonio’s hospitality is first-class, professional and fun! I have really come to rely on their destination expertise.
SUZZANNE: What would you like other planners to know about using a CVB?
JANA: The San Antonio CVB is one of the best. Their dedication to ensuring your event is a success is not only their goal, but their passion.
