Vicki Hackett, Office Manager/Executive Assistant with the Plastics Pipe Institute is what some in the meeting planning industry call an “occasional planner.” An occasional meeting planner, as in part-time, maybe once or twice a year, not your every day of the year kind of meeting planner. The destination experts at the convention and visitors bureau (CVB) are a perfect partner for the occasional meeting planner. Why? Because at the CVB no question is too big or too small. They truly are the destination experts and best of all – their services are free! They know the ins and outs of their city and are dedicated to making every meeting a success. Today, we hear from Vicki about how she utilized the resources and expertise from Visit Plano.
SUZZANNE: Tell us, what does your job entail?
Currently, I am the Office Manager/Executive Assistant. In my role, I also spend a lot of my time on meeting planning.
SUZZANNE: What is one of your significant job challenges that working with Visit Plano helped you solve?
Wearing many hats in the association world, Visit Plano provided excellent tools, not only for promoting the city but also shared recommendations for excursions outside the meeting space. During my event, the weather was rainy and Visit Plano brought over umbrellas and ponchos to our attendees to allow them the opportunity to walk the Shops of Legacy and dine out at the many wonderful restaurants Plano has to offer. This in my opinion was way beyond the call of duty – which I love!!!
SUZZANNE: What are some of the distinctive attributes/destination offerings of Plano, TX that helped to make your meeting great?
The city is very clean and well designed. There are many dining and shopping options. Our association office is in the DFW area and only occasionally do we book meetings inside our demographic area. We fell in love with Plano and the Marriott at the Shops of Legacy so much that we will be having another meeting there in 2018.
SUZZANNE: What do you see as innovative or trending in the future of the meeting’s industry?
Digital marketing – the ability to share your experiences immediately with other attendees, which is why it’s so important to pick the right destination and partner with the right people. Drones also seem to have taken over as well to allow real life, in room experiences.
SUZZANNE: How would you describe the relationship you have with the CVB? What would you compare it to?
I believe my relationship is compared to “family.” I know that if I need something, they will do everything in their power to assist me. The staff of Visit Plano is absolutely amazing – so much so, I would enjoy spending time with them outside of the work environment.
SUZZANNE: What did your attendees say about your overall experience in Plano?
They loved it! I believe if I would have them rate the experience, they would rank Plano on a scale of 1 to 5 – a total “5.”
SUZZANNE: The top 3 things your attendees enjoyed about meeting in Plano?
The ability to walk out the hotel door and be in walking distance to many restaurants, from 5 star to casual dining. Plano has easy access to/from both major airports and the overall customer service received from the time of arrival to your departure.
SUZZANNE: Did you use a unique venue for a gathering or event while in the Plano area?
We do all of our events under one roof, but I can assure you there are many options in Plano if you do take your attendees off property.
