Hi my name is Shimo with DMAI, Destination Marketing Association Internationally and we are the trade associations for conventions & visitors bureaus.
This month has been full of firsts for me…and given how fast our worlds are spinning, I figured there is no better way than the present to take experimentation to heart. In fact I think honing in on the ability to experiment regularly and then execute on the best experiments is the only way forward.
Welcome to my first video blog!
I have two topics to share with you today. 1) about importance of destination education and 2) share a new streamlined way of delivering this education to you online and live through a webcast, which was a first!
Let me start with destination education…If you’re going to plan a meeting for people who expect more of an experience than just the content, then you have to find a way to educate yourself on destinations and destinations within destinations.
Based upon what planners have told us in the past, what you’re looking for, besides promotions of course, information about local events, hotel developments, event ideas, unique venues and relevant local news.
But who has time to comb the web and pull all this information together?
This is where our experiment came in. During our recent DMAI Annual Convention where we had over 1,500 destination marketing professionals and business partners come together. My empowerMINT.com team decided we would pull our finest Texas meeting destinations together and produce a LIVE broadcast of 15 minute presentations by each of our 14 CVBs.
We were not exactly sure how this was going to roll but the feedback and interaction amongst our planner audience was amazing! And we even had a team of planners from Brazil who sent us in this photo. Which just goes to show you that the world can get a lot smaller, pretty easily.
While our audience viewed us live, they were able to chat with us and each other!! So through our experiment we recognized the importance of bringing planners together in a single platform, at the convenience of their desktop or mobile device to learn from our destination experts as well as each other.
We are now putting our heads together to figure how we can continue doing this type of planner education for other regions and we’ve had Southern California and New York destinations already wanting to participate. I’d sure like to hear from you on what you think about this concept. If you want to see the replay on Texas Destinations broadcast, be sure to check it out on our replay page.
And if you’re interested in joining the fun when we broadcast the next region, be sure to sign up for our Insights email at empowerMINT.com.
And while you’re there, get the latest planner news right on the destination profile’s home page. We’ve curated this news just for you.
Before I sign off—I do want to recognize the executive producer of our LIVE broadcast, Chuck Boyce of Authority Media Marketing. His team did an amazing job and if you’re considering doing something for your own meeting, Chuck is definitely your guy.
