Welcome! This is Shimo….and I’m Terri Roberts…and we’re from Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI). For those of you who may not be familiar, DMAI is the trade association for destination marketing organizations, often referred to in the meetings industry as convention & visitors bureaus or CVBs.
Well Terri, I think the title of our episode is quite compelling today. Just last month we conducted a webinar with Brittany from STR, Smith Travel Research and they were offering our members an update from the hotel market. 2013 was a record breaking year for hotels in terms of ADR and total rooms sold and from the looks of it 2014 is looking just as healthy. We’re coming off a summer with some record breaking months…I think for June alone, it was a banner month with the most rooms sold in a single month, ever.
Key Episode Take-Aways:
- A look at the changing “driver’s seat” transition between buyer’s and seller’s meeting marketplace
- Attendees who pay their own way to attend, and depend on attractive rates to participate
- Establishing the long term worth of their business sector
- Strategies and resources that help
Terri had a great conversation recently with someone I really admire, Janiece J. Sneegas, Ph.D., Director, General Assembly and Conference Services, Unitarian Universalist Association. She and Janiece had a very interesting conversation about her navigation of the current meeting marketplace and the challenges she is facing and how she is adapting.
